Who is Big John?

Who is Big John and why is he the only guy in the reviews?

Well Big John is a US company and it appears that he or they are the major player, specializing in heavy duty, over-sized toilet seats, suitable for extra-large people. You will find extra strong toilet seats from other brands, however Big John’s capacity of 1200 lbs will be very hard to beat.

Buying Guide for Best Toilet Seat for Heavy Person

When choosing a toilet seat suitable for heavy people, there are a few things you will have to consider before making your final decision.  These include:

How much you weigh

The first thing to consider is how much the person using the toilet weighs.  Each toilet seat will have a maximum weight capacity, so if the person is under this weight, then that model will be fine.

The Big John W-1 has a weight capacity of 1200 lbs, meaning it can hold a person weighing up to 1200 lbs.

Stability

Weight capacity is one important feature.  It will make sure that the seat is strong enough to not crack under a heavy weight.  However, stability is another feature to consider.

Heavy duty toilet seats need to stay firm when a heavy person sits on it.  An over-sized toilet seat should have stabilizing bumpers to ensure the seat will not shift around when the user is sitting on it.

Comfort

Every toilet seat should be comfortable to sit on but when a heavy person is sitting down, the design of the toilet seat is important.  Of course, it will need to be larger than regular seats to accommodate a larger behind, but it also should have a comfortable, ergonomic design.

Also, these over-sized seats are usually a little thicker.  Not only to give them extra strength but also to give them extra height.  These extra-large units can add an extra 1.5 to 2 inches in height to a toilet, making it easier for the user to sit down and stand up.

If you are looking for an open front toilet seat, then the Big John 3-W could be what you need.  An open front toilet seat makes cleaning and wiping, that little bit easier.  The horseshoe shaped seat has a gap at the front, to allow easier access.

Price

In general, toilet seats are inexpensive to buy, however do expect to pay a little more for specialty toilet seats.  There is a lot more material needed to make these strong, heavy duty seats; therefore the price will match the quality.

More general things to look for when buying an extra-strong toilet seat:

Ease of installation:

Easy to clamp or bolt on installation is what you will be looking for. A toilet seat that is easy to install is a bonus and should take much more than 10 to 20 minutes.

Materials:

The toilet seat should be made of strong and durable material to ensure that the seat will not break under pressure and will last for many years. Big John’s toilet seats are made of high impact, chemically resistant plastic, so they should last for a long time.

Shape and size:

Toilet seats most often come in elongated and standard sizes. You would normally buy the right shaped seat for your toilet shape, however the heavy duty toilet seats reviewed above are all suitable for both standard and elongated toilets

Hinges:

A good quality toilet seat should have good quality hinges. A heavy-duty toilet seat should have strong hinges to ensure stability and a reliable fit.

  1. Excellent reviews. Close but not exactly on the problem we have with our toilet seats.

Our problem is that the toilet seat shifts to right or left depending on how the user shifts his/her weight around when using the seat and getting up from the seat.

The portion of the hinge attached to the bowl cannot be adequately locked in place. The holes in the bowl are very large and the screw diameters are much smaller. The tapered plastic nuts supplied with those screws do not fill those holes but only engage two opposite sides sides. The net result is that the mounting screws can easily slide left or right when the user shifts his/her weight around when using the seat and getting up from the seat. How can we fix the lower portion of the hinge to the bowl so that we do not have this movement?

    • Exactly. Nailed it on the head. It’s not the toilet seat that’s the issue. It’s the cheap hardware that loosens and loosens and finally breaks. The rubber stoppers under the toilet seat that grip the porcelain could be 1/2 the answer to the right/left loosening shifts though. That and unbreakable steel hinges.

    • My sincere apologies but I would have no idea how to fix that problem. Would a hardware store have some idea how to fill in the holes with something to make them smaller. I hope you can find a solution to your problem soon. Best of luck.

      • Actually there are inserts made for this purpose. I found them at Home Depot. They are tough plastic and it goes in the hole in the toilet itself. Then you put the bolt in and screw it to the bolt. Consider upgrading any plastic toilet seat hinges with solid brass or stainless steel. They will last and will not break.

our problem is my son breaks the seal where it is attached to the floor. We have gone through several toilets. We need a big foot and seal so it sets on the floor and doesn’t break
